US to hold international summit on Iran
The US will host an international summit next month in Poland to discuss Iran’s influence as related to the stability of the Middle East, said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday.
According to the State Department, the summit address “a range of critical issues including terrorism and extremism, missile development and proliferation, maritime trade and security, and threats posed by proxy groups across the region.”
More than 70 countries from the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Asia have been invited to attend the summit on February 13th.
“Countries will all come together to focus on Middle East stability and peace and freedom and security here in this region,” said Pompeo. “And that includes an important element of making sure that Iran is not a destabilizing influence.”
The announcement comes amid Pompeo’s tour through the Middle East, during which he spoke with leaders in nine countries about Trump’s plans to withdraw troops from Syria (troops began departing on January 11th).
While on the trip, Pompeo promised allies the US was “redoubling” efforts to increase pressure on Iran and was committed to the total destruction of ISIS.
On Friday, Pompeo landed in Bahrain to begin the second leg of his tour -which will take him to Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.
“These Gulf partnerships are critical to achieving shared regional objectives,” said the State Department, adding that Pompeo will work to advance a proposed strategic alliance with partners in the Middle East.
While in Saudi Arabia, Pompeo will attempt to diffuse tensions with Qatar and discuss the death of Jamal Khashoggi.
Florida Governor sacks Broward County Sheriff
Broward County, Florida is often in the news.
Last February, 17 people were killed during the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
During midterms, it was the epicenter of voter fraud.
After midterms, Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes was suspended by former Governor Rick Scott even though she had already announced her retirement.
During the 2016 primaries, Broward County was represented in Congress by the infamous Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who abruptly resigned from her position as DNC Chairwoman following the organization’s unlawful support of Hillary Clinton.
Now, the county is represented by Donna Brazile – who led the DNC in Wasserman Schultz’s absence and published a book about the DNC’s inappropriate fundraising agreement with the Clinton campaign.
This week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspended Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel over his incompetence as related to the Parkland shooting.
“Sheriff Israel has repeatedly failed and has demonstrated a pattern of poor leadership,” said DeSantis. “He failed to protect Floridians and visitors during the tragic Fort Lauderdale International Airport shooting in 2017. He failed in his duties to keep our families and children safe during the devastating shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018. These incidents demonstrate Sheriff Israel’s repeated incompetence and neglect of duty.”
The Parkland shooting was investigated by a state-appointed public safety commission, which last month issued a damning report criticizing law enforcement’s response.
The report blamed Israel for implementing a policy allowing cops to decide not to enter a building where there is an active shooter (previously, they were trained to enter).
According to the report, the new policy led to inaction by eight deputies during the Parkland shooting. At least one deputy fled the scene.
Taking over for Israel will be former Coral Spring Police Sgt. Gregory Tony, who specializes in active-shooter training. “The people of Broward County deserve accountable, competent leaders who can safeguard our communities,” said Tony.
In the face of his suspension, Israel told reporters he had given “amazing leadership” to his team and that he plans to fight his suspension.
