UK proposes European escort fleet to protect oil tankers in Strait of Hormuz
The UK on Sunday announced a proposal to create a European-led maritime force to protect oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. On Thursday, the UK ordered its navy to escort all UK-flagged tankers through the region.
“We heard that they intend to send a European fleet to the Persian Gulf, which naturally carries a hostile message, is provocative, and will increase tensions,” said an Iranian government spokesman.
The proposal follows mounting aggression from Iran, including the capture of the British vessel Stena Impero on July 19th. The ship was seized as payback after British authorities detained an Iranian tanker over allegations that it was violating EU sanctions on Syria.
The Stena Impero and its crew remain in captivity at an Iranian port.
A Royal Navy warship arrived in the Gulf Sunday to escort British-flagged tankers carrying oil through the Strait of Hormuz.
“The presence of foreign forces will not help the region’s security and will be the main source of tensions,” claimed Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
The UK’s proposal for a European escort fleet has received little support – perhaps because it excludes the United States.
The US is already working with Saudi Arabia and other allies to ensure freedom of navigation in the contested region.

The game is free and can be played on mobile phones, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Mac, and Windows PC.
As of March 2019, the game had nearly 250 million registered players.
