New deal lifts tariffs on Mexican tomatoes

The Grind

The Trump Administration this week finalized a draft agreement to lift the 17.5% tariff imposed on Mexican tomatoes in May.

The deal also closes an investigation into whether Mexico was “dumping” tomatoes at artificially low prices and sets new minimum prices for imported tomatoes.

“The agreement establishes unprecedented measures and enforcement provisions that will help protect American tomato farmers from injurious dumped Mexican tomatoes,” reads a statement from a growers’ group in Florida.

The Details

Groups representing importers also welcomed the deal, but warned that its harsh inspection requirements could destabilize the US tomato market.

Under the new agreement, roughly 65% of imported tomatoes would be subject to inspection at the US border.

Mexico provides more than 50% of the fresh tomatoes sold in the US.

Trump cancels visit to Denmark over Greenland issue

The Grind

President Trump on Tuesday cancelled a planned trip to Denmark after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected his offer to purchase Greenland.

“Denmark is a very special country with incredible people,” tweeted Trump, “but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting.”

Frederiksen described the idea of selling Greenland as “absurd.”

The Details

Trump’s announcement further infuriated Danish officials, who were already upset by his suggestion to purchase Greenland.

“Is this some sort of joke?” tweeted former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. “Deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark.”

The cancellation is insulting, added MEP Rasmus Jarlov. “As a Dane (and a conservative) it is very hard to believe…Are parts of the US for sale? Alaska? Please show more respect.”

Morten Ostergaard, who leads Denmark’s Social Liberal party, described Trump as “incalculable.” His behavior “shows why, more than ever, we should consider the EU countries as our closest allies.”
