The NSA was still able to collect metadata on calls and texts, but it had to do so through the telephone companies.

In 2018, facing insurmountable legal and technical challenges (the NSA couldn’t determine which records it had obtained legally), the NSA shut down the program and deleted all records obtained since 2015.

Now, with the Freedom Act’s provisions set to expire Dec. 15th, Congress must decide whether the NSA should retain the authority to revive the program in the future.

”After speaking with intelligence and law-enforcement officials, it’s become clear that changes to the program under the USA Freedom Act have significantly weakened its usefulness,” said Senator Richard Burr (R-NC).

”It’s really not clear to me why a program with limited intelligence value and clear compliance problems should be reauthorized,” added Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). “And unless there is good reason to believe that it should, I do not believe we should reauthorize it.”

NSA official Susan Morgan told lawmakers the agency would prefer the program’s status remain “expired” rather than “terminated” in case future technological advances warrant the program’s revival, but when asked could not confirm if the program had even helped the NSA catch a terrorist or foil a plot.

<font style=”font: 12px helvetica; color: rgb(118, 146, 60); line-height:30px;”>

<font style=”font: 24px helvetica; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); line-height:46px;”>Try Your Best

<font style=”font: 15px helvetica; color: rgb(136, 31, 35); line-height:22px;”>The Headline

Trump: Hurry up and impeach me already

<font style=”font: 15px helvetica; color: rgb(136, 31, 35); line-height:22px;”>The Grind

”If you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast, so we can have a fair trial in the Senate, and so that our country can get back to business,” tweeted President Trump on Thursday morning. “We will have Schiff, the Bidens, Pelosi, and many more testify, and will reveal, for the first time, how corrupt our system really is. I was elected to ‘clean the swamp’ and that’s what I am doing!”

That same morning, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi officially asked the chamber to move forward with articles of impeachment.

”The facts are uncontested,” said Pelosi. “The President abused his power for his own personal political benefit at the expense of our national security” when he called the Ukrainian President this summer.

”The president’s actions have seriously violated the Constitution…The president leaves us no choice but to act because he is trying to corrupt, once again, the election for his own benefit.”

<font style=”font: 15px helvetica; color: rgb(136, 31, 35); line-height:22px;”>The Details

The Ukraine controversy will form the basis for articles of impeachment, but Democrats are likely to include other crimes, including accusations from Robert Mueller’s Russia report.

House lawmakers are expected to hold a floor vote on impeachment later this month.

Here’s what will happen: The House will vote to impeach, the Senate will hold a dramatic trial and vote not to convict. So, what happened?”

Graham added that he would not follow Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) in subpoenaing other lawmakers’ phone records, because doing so would be “chaos.”

In a harshly-worded statement on Pelosi’s announcement, White House Press Sec. Stephanie Grisham accused Democrats of the very crimes they are laying on Trump:

”Democrats’ sham impeachment is a blatant, purely partisan attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election. By their own admission, Democrats say they have to ‘impeach the President’ because they cannot defeat him at the ballot box,” wrote Grisham

Democrats are guilty of ‘abusing their power, lying to the American people, and making a mockery of US law.'

”How many Democrats will join [Pelosi] in driving right off the cliff with this illegitimate impeachment hoax? Speaker Pelosi’s instruction to advance this impeachment process – one that has violated every precedent – moves this country toward the most partisan and illegitimate subversion of the Constitution in our history.”

You can show the Democrats what the American people really think by donating today to the NRCC, NRSC, or Trump 2020 campaign.

The Daily Grind is a proud partner of the RNC and all of its committees.

<font style=”font: 12px helvetica; color: rgb(118, 146, 60); line-height:30px;”>

<font style=”font: 15px helvetica; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); line-height:22px;”>
<font style=”font: 15px helvetica; color: rgb(236, 147, 67); line-height:30px;”>GOOD TO THE LAST DROP:
<font style=”font: 15px helvetica; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); line-height:30px;”>Did you know… The state with the longest coastline in the Continental U.S. is Michigan.

<!–160×600–>
