Gretchen Whitmer Violates Own Social Distancing Order During Protest

The Grind

On Thursday morning, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer told protesters to wear a mask and stay six feet apart. Later in the day, she appeared to violate her own rules.

“I encourage everyone who is protesting, if you are out demonstrating or out congregating at all, please wear a mask and please try to stay six feet away from others,” she said on Mojo In The Morning.

Whitmer, who is angling to be Joe Biden’s vice presidential running mate, participated in a protest in downtown Detroit over the death of George Floyd.

The Details

She marched along as the closely packed large group chanted, “Hands up, don’t shoot,” and “This is what democracy looks like.”

Whitmer, wearing a cloth mask, was standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Bishop Charles Ellis and Lt. Gov. Garland Gilchrist.

Chris Meagher, Whitmer’s press consultant, shared a photo on Twitter of the governor in a large throng of people, who were also violating her orders.

The Detroit News asked Whitmer’s office about the apparent hypocrisy.

Tiffany Brown claimed the “unity march” didn’t violate Whitmer’s latest order because it states, “Nothing in this order shall be taken to abridge protections guaranteed by the state or federal constitution.” Read more…

Twitter Removes Trump Campaign’s Tribute to George Floyd

On Thursday, Twitter removed a video tribute to George Floyd posted by President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign, claiming the video violated the social media platform’s policy on copyrighted material.

“We are working toward a more just society, but that means building up, not tearing down. Joining hands, not hurling fists. Standing in solidarity, not surrendering to hostility,” the Trump campaign tweeted with the video.

While Twitter has removed the video for an alleged copyright violation, YouTube has not removed it. The video is indeed a moving tribute to George Floyd and a call for unity in this painful time.

The Details

It features a torrent of images showing George Floyd, the peaceful protests over his death, the violence of looters and rioters, and the moving videos of police officers hugging Black Lives Matter activists. The video includes Trump’s speech as a voiceover. It ends with a call to peaceful protest against the violence of antifa.

Trump’s tribute and call for unity:

“The death of George Floyd on the streets of Minneapolis was a grave tragedy. It should never have happened. It has filled Americans all over the country with horror, anger, and grief. We support the right of peaceful protesters and we hear their pleas. The voices of law-abiding citizens must be heard, and heard very loudly,” Trump says in the video. Read more…
