Senator McConnell cancels August recess

The Grind

The Senate will not be taking its annual August recess this year, announced Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

“Due to the historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president’s nominees, and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to the end of the fiscal year, the August recess has been canceled.”

The highly-anticipated announcement is bad new for Democrats facing tough re-election fights, as they’ll be stuck in DC instead of campaigning back home.

Midterm elections will be held in November.

The Details

Lawmakers are now focused on passing as many of the annual 12 spending bills as they can before the fiscal year ends on September 30th.

Another priority for Republicans will be to confirm as many of President Trump’s lifetime judicial appointments as possible.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who embraced the expanded work schedule, says he will focus on healthcare legislation designed to lower premiums in anticipation of rising costs.

Schumer also said he expects Trump to cancel his summer plans and continue working alongside the Senate.

“We assume he’ll be here in Washington working right alongside us. Given the urgency of these weeks, we presume he won’t be jetting off to Bedminster or Mar-a-Lago or spending countless hours on the golf course.”

Benedict Cumberbatch saves cyclist from muggers

The Grind

A London resident was saved mid-robbery when actor Benedict Cumberbatch scared away four muggers who were trying to steal his bike.

Cumberbatch, famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC show Sherlock, spotted the mugging from his Uber ride and jumped out of the vehicle to intervene.

The incident occurred near Baker Street, where Cumberbatch’s fictional character lives with his sidekick Dr. Watson (played by Martin Freeman).

The Details

Uber driver Manuel Dias, who joined Cumberbatch in saving the cyclist, descried the incident as “surreal.”

“Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just round the corner from Baker Street,” said Dias. “I had hold of one lad and Benedict another. He seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was very brave. He did most of it…They tried to hit him, but he defended himself and pushed them away. He wasn’t injured. Then I think they also recognized it was Benedict and ran away.”

NPR confirmed there were no arrests and no items stolen. The victim, who was on a job for Deliveroo, did not require medical attention.

Cumberbatch, who is also known for his roles in Dr. Strange, The Hobbit, Avengers: Infinity War, and The Imitation Game, is being hailed as a real-life superhero.

“The cyclist was lucky…Benedict was courageous, brave, and selfless. If he hadn’t stepped in, the cyclist could have been seriously injured,” said Dias.
